Armadillos digging in your yard and under your home can be a nuisance, but it’s important they’re removed humanely. Why?
1. Armadillos keep insects, snails, and beetles out of your gardens
With an especially keen sense of smell, armadillos eat bugs and snails that could eat up your garden or plants. Armadillos also eat various types of ants, keeping these pests’ mounds out of your yard! These insectivores also love crickets, grasshoppers, and termites, meaning these nine-banded critters could help keep your home insect-free.
2. They’re helping advance medical research
As you may know, armadillos can carry leprosy (which is why you should leave handling them to professionals), and they may help cure it one day as researchers are constantly observing these critters. Because of armadillos, scientists have been able to develop a vaccine against the disease!
3. Armadillos help researchers understand multiple births and genetics
Nine-banded armadillos are the only known mammal to always give birth to four identical young. All four babies share the same egg and are as cute as can be– just see for yourself! Researchers study this instance in order to better understand multiple births and how genetics effect it as well.
